Learn 日本語 with Minecraft (2月23日)
On YouTube, I found this video of a person playing Minecraft while speaking in Japanese, and I watched a little under 30 minutes of the gameplay. In the video, the player created a brand new survival world, began to build a house, and began to explore caves a little bit. I thought this video was quite good in letting me test my listening skills. The player talked at a pace that was a bit out of my comfort zone, but I was still able to hear familiar words throughout the video. The person also used grammar forms that I have not yet learned, so this was a little challenging for me. I also learned some new words and obtained cultural knowledge!
While I watched this video, I heard grammar skills and vocabulary that we talked about in lesson 6, lesson 7, and in lessons from last semester. For example, I heard the player use the verb -て form, specifically with the word “行って”. Other grammar skills that I heard the player use are the following:
- たい form (to indicate that you want to do something. In the video, I heard 食べたい and 行きたい)
- ましょう form
- ています form
- てみます form to indicate that you will try and do something. I specifically heard the word つくってみます.
These are some of the vocabulary terms that I was able to find:
せかい
しぬ
うーん
パソコン
つくる
どんな
中 (なか)
まえ
Colors (such as あか)
えいが
まだ
いろいろな
まど
どうぶつ
こわい
おもしろい
ほしい
たいへん
まつ verb
Some cultural knowledge that I obtained from this video is that in Japan, Minecraft is popular. I also learned that people use the word よし as a way of saying “okay.” I also learned a few new words:
- てつ means iron
- せきたん means coal
- かります is a verb meaning to cut or something similar to that

へええー、マインクラフトのビデオですか!おもしろいですね。
